Meet George Waters, Senior Manager of Green Section Education at the USGA
Q: In addition to your job title, tell us a little bit about what you do / what your company does.
I am the Senior Manager of Green Section Education at the United States Golf Association (USGA). The USGA was founded in 1894 and we run national championships like the U.S. Open, we help oversee the golf handicap system, we are involved in establishing the Rules of Golf and rules for equipment like clubs and balls, we preserve and highlight the history of the game through our museum, and my department works to help golf courses improve their maintenance practices and environmental sustainability by funding scientific research, consulting directly with courses, and through our education program (which I lead).
Q: What made you decide to join Salem Station?
The USGA’s headquarters is in New Jersey, but we’re currently building a satellite campus in Pinehurst. I just relocated down here from the main campus, but the new building isn’t ready yet and my “home office” has been full of boxes and noisy children, so I needed a place where I could be productive.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Salem Station?
I love how quiet it is. My work involves a lot of reading and writing and the working environment at Salem Station makes it easy for me to concentrate. It’s also really nice being able to take a break and walk right out into downtown Apex.
Q: What are your favorite tech tools to get your job done or keep your life organized?
I have an Excel sheet with three columns – Produce, Communicate, Delegate – that I use to keep track of the various tasks we’re working on or the emails I’m supposed to send. I used to rely on paper to-do lists, but then my lists started getting too long so I had to go digital.
Q: What is the last show you binge watched?
The most recent season of “The Great British Baking Show” on Netflix. We don’t really do any baking at home besides packaged brownies, but my wife and I love the show. It’s amazing what they can make and unlike most “reality” shows, the hosts and contestants are all very positive and want each other to succeed.
Q: What is one thing you cannot live without?
Diet Mountain Dew
Q: What is your favorite thing to do on the weekends?
Take my kids to all the different parks and playgrounds in the area, and sneak off to the golf course if I can!
